F.A.Q.

When can I register?

We will announce the opening of registration in good time, once all details are settled. The best thing is to sign up for our newsletter and automatically be among the first to hear when registration opens.

May I accept outside help?

All participants must be self-supported for the entire route and may not receive help from support vehicles or crew. Team starters are expressly exempt and may support each other. Help from other participants is, however, permitted and expected in emergencies — for example crashes, help with medical emergencies, or serious mechanical failures such as a broken spoke. But things like punctures or a poorly adjusted derailleur all randonneurs should be able to repair themselves.

Can I get the GPS track in advance?

For safety reasons we cannot share the track in advance, as we usually ride the route again shortly before the event. This guarantees a clear run for you.

Can I get the .gpx track from a past Grevet?

Off-road, unlike road cycling, we cannot guarantee lasting rideability and comparability of the routes (e.g. sand drift in summer, construction sites, harvester lanes, etc.). The route lives. That is one reason we have limited the Grevets in time. So please understand that, for safety reasons alone, we cannot pass on tracks from past events. The Grevets are ephemera.

How can I report on my Grevet experiences?

We are especially glad to receive your stories and impressions. The best way is to use #grevet or #grevet_cycling on Instagram and tag us with @grevet_cycling so we hear about it. If you have your own blog, feel free to send us the link so we can link your reports. The same goes for YouTube videos and other formats. We also welcome guest authors for the Grevet blog.

Can I cancel my participation?

Starting is only possible after registration and payment of the entry fee. Registration is binding; a refund — as with all sporting and music events — is no longer possible after registration. After registration we calculate our expenses and orders. You can, however, transfer or resell your ticket to another person. Please contact us about the process if needed. The organiser is entitled to cancel individual events due to force majeure (e.g. severe weather, new regulations, etc.). In any case we would arrange an equivalent replacement.

There is no Grevet in my region yet, but I have route-planning experience and would like to offer one.

Feel free to contact us by email and we will see what is possible.

Is the event suitable for beginners?

The event is aimed at experienced cyclists. It requires good endurance, basic fitness and knowledge of handling the equipment. Beginners should prepare well and consider shorter stages.

What are the weather conditions on the route at this time of year?

The weather can vary, so it is advisable to prepare for different conditions, from risk of sunstroke to hail showers. Please check the weather forecasts for the start, finish and the stops regularly.

What equipment is recommended?

A list of recommended equipment is provided to participants in advance. This includes, among other things, a light tent/tarp/bivvy bag, sleeping bag, weatherproof clothing, spare parts for the bike and personal hygiene items.

Are you completely on your own?

There will be limited support options at the checkpoints, but participants should be able to act largely independently. Emergency contact information will be provided. The routes run through the good infrastructure of Central Europe, however, so support is never far away.

Is it easy to find water, food or accommodation?

Our routes run through varied terrain and there are sometimes longer sections between supply points, but as a rule these are never more than 30 kilometres apart. Our detailed roadbook helps with preparation.

Do I need insurance?

All participants ride at their own responsibility. In the event of harm to themselves (e.g. a crash), to equipment or to third parties, each participant is liable for their own actions. All participants must hold liability insurance, whether through a federation or their own private policy. In addition, valid death, accident and health insurance covering emergency rescue and repatriation is mandatory during the event. We do not provide insurance ourselves and exclude liability for any damage that may arise directly and/or indirectly to you or other parties.

How do I prepare for a Supergrevet?

Long-distance routine helps. We recommend riding the Quartette or comparable tours beforehand. That way you can test route, nutrition and equipment in everyday conditions.

What is special about Vienna–Berlin and Vienna–Trieste?

Both routes follow historical models from the 1890s and run almost exclusively on small country roads, forest and field tracks. Vienna–Berlin takes you over 800 km to the German capital; Vienna–Trieste leads you over the main alpine ridge to the Mediterranean.

What happens if I abandon the route?

No problem. Safety first. You can stop at any time and are not obliged to finish the route. Always plan alternatives for getting back, too.

Which should I ride — Vienna–Berlin or Vienna–Trieste?

Both routes are real classics but differ in difficulty:

  • Vienna–Berlin is considered comparatively beginner-friendly for a long distance, despite the greater total distance (800 km). Why? The route is largely flat to gently rolling, avoids big mountains and offers continuous, rolling terrain. Many participants use it for their first ride over 600 km or as an entry into the world of ultra-distances.
  • Vienna–Trieste is shorter (approx. 550 km) but more demanding. The route goes over the Wechsel, into the south-eastern alpine foreland and finally over the Karst to the Adriatic. So real climbs, alpine passages and more technical gravel sections await. Anyone who loves climbing metres or deliberately wants to take on a challenge will find the right choice here.

Tip: For newcomers to long distances we often recommend starting with Vienna–Berlin and perhaps daring Vienna–Trieste the following year.
