The evening

To wrap up Basel–Kleve we come together at Cycle Collective in Meerbusch. From 18:00 we head out for an easy shared spin of about an hour; from 19:00 the get-together follows — food, drinks, arriving. And then the best part: the riders’ stories — the ride, told by those who rode it.

At the get-together there are snacks, Mate from caámate and beer (also alcohol-free) from Fürst Wiacek — while stocks last. A basic supply is on the house, with more available on site at Cycle Collective. Mate and beer are also with us at the start in Basel.

Mate and beer — with standards

In 1919 a company in Bayreuth launched a drink called Yermeth: alcohol-free, carbonated, made from Paraguay tea, rich in caffeine and tannins — developed explicitly to fill the bottles of tourists and cyclists. Mate as a sports drink, a century before the first energy-drink shelf. Today most people know mate only as Club Mate — brewed in Middle Franconia since 1924, brought to Berlin in 1994 by an ex-squatter from Friedrichshain with 200 crates too many on the truck bed. Squatter bars took what he delivered. Then the hackers. Then the ravers. Caffeine for the night, not for the saddle. We ride with the original instead: caámate — organic, fairly and directly traded, aged 18 to 24 months, entirely plastic-free. Real mate, brewed hot.

And the beer comes from Fürst Wiacek, a Berlin craft brewery from Spandau. Founded in 2016 by Georg Fürst and Lukasz Wiacek, it brewed one of Germany’s first New England IPAs that same year and is now among the country’s highest-rated breweries — available alcohol-free at the get-together too.

Why come by

The ride finishes in Kleve; we celebrate together in Meerbusch. The evening is the moment when tracker dots and names on the arrival list turn back into faces. At Grevet the social side isn’t a supporting act — it is part of the ride.

Kleve as a finish — with history

That the ride ends on the Lower Rhine is no accident. Back in 1894 the historic long-distance race Basel–Cleve finished right here: 620 kilometres for the Kaiser’s Prize, started at St. Ludwig on the Basel border, with the town of Cleve as the finish. Of 45 starters only 21 arrived — the rest abandoned along the way.

The arrival was the real moment even then: the town of Cleve donated a silver centrepiece, and the women of Cleve put up their own silver cup for those who made it. We welcome you today in exactly that tradition — except that we celebrate rather than rank. And there is still something to win: among all finishers we raffle off a few small goodies, including prizes from Grevet and Fahrer Berlin.

And one more thread leads here: Meerbusch — more precisely Osterath, home of Cycle Collective — was itself a control point in one of the later editions of the historic race. So a second circle closes: the finish is in Kleve, and we celebrate at the historic checkpoint in Meerbusch-Osterath.

Everyone who finished the Supergrevet Basel–Kleve — and expressly also the finishers of the current Grevet season and the regional series. If you took part in the Grevet Quartett Niederrhein 2026, you are warmly welcome.

Host

The host is Cycle Collective in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf — a premium bike shop, café and community hub in one. The shop sees itself as a “second home” for beautiful bikes, coffee, books, shared tours and events. More about the shop: cycle-collective.de.

Getting there from Kleve

The finish is in Kleve; the party is around 85 kilometres further south in Meerbusch. By train: from Kleve take the RE 10 towards Krefeld/Düsseldorf, then change towards Meerbusch-Osterath (on the Krefeld–Düsseldorf line); from there it is a few minutes to the shop. By car about one hour. Bikes come along — best to plan the connection in advance.
